Northern Lights Beanie - Troubleshooting
If you’ve become stuck while crocheting this pattern, you should be able to find the reason and answer below.
If you do not see the answer below and you have read through the pattern paying attention to all the included notes, then please send me an email and let me know.
I’m crocheting my hat and it looks really small.
This pattern increases really quickly in the beginning, and it takes a few body rows for it to start to bloom out. Ensure your gauge is correct and you are using appropriate yarn, then continue following the pattern.
My hat is too stiff and tight or way too loose and full of large gaps in the stitches.
Chances are that you are using the wrong yarn or hook size, or your gauge isn’t correct. Make sure you are using the yarn weight recommended in the pattern. You cannot substitute worsted weight yarn for the main yarn. If you are using a bulky weight yarn, it may be too thick, the pattern is designed to use a thinner bulky weight yarn.
There are large gaps between my rows, almost like lacework.
Most likely you crocheted your B rounds AROUND your chain stitches from the A rounds. You need to crochet INTO the skipped stitches from round A. Look over the photos and additional instructions from Rounds 4A and 4B.
My stitches don’t have the same rainbow effect as the sample photos in the pattern.
Make sure you are placing your first stitches in the correct place and skipping the right stitches.
My accent stitches look small and “wimpy”.
Make sure if you are using a worsted weight yarn for the accent that it is a thick fluffy roving yarn like the one the pattern is written for. Regular worsted yarns aren’t thick enough. Use a bulky weight yarn, but make sure it isn’t thicker than the main yarn.
I crocheted a baby/child hat as a gift and it doesn’t fit the baby/child.
Although I use average sizes for my patterns, head sizes can vary greatly. For example, when my youngest was 2 he wore an adult small sized hat. I also know some adults who wear child-sized hats. That’s why I always recommend you measure the circumference of the recipient’s head.
I tried to make this into a slouchy hat and it looks funny.
I really don’t recommend using this pattern as a slouch hat. It’s not loose enough and won’t drape properly.
