Northern Lights Beanie: Pattern - Part 3
Now that Round 4A is now complete, you will be working on Round 4B.
You will be using the main coloured yarn to fill in the gaps left after the previous round (Round 4A).
Sizes: 17” (18”, 19”, 20”, 21”, 22”, 23”, 24”) or Sizes: 43 (46, 48, 51, 53, 56, 58, 61) cm
Round 4B:
Continue working with main colour yarn.
(See photos and additional instructions below.)
Still using K (6.5 mm) hook: Ch 1, sl st to top of first hdc. 2Hdc in skipped st. (Sl st to top of next hdc, 2hdc in skipped st) repeat around.
Sl st to first sl st. (Unlike the previous round, do NOT switch colours before completing this round.)
48 (51, 54, 57, 60, 63, 66, 69) sts
You will now be using the main coloured yarn to fill in the gaps left after the previous round (Round 4A).
Go ahead and start the round as the pattern states.
Chain 1 as your starting chain and then slip stitch to the top of the very first accent coloured hdc made in the previous round. Make sure you do not make your slip stitches too tight, maintain the same tension.
Now you will put 2 hdc stitches into the stitch that you skipped in the previous round.
This is where you are “filling in the gaps” that you left after the previous round.
While making the hdc stitches in the “B” rounds you will work IN FRONT of the chain stitches from the “A” rounds. This means you will push the chain stitches from the previous “A” round behind your hook and yarn, and work your stitches IN FRONT of the chain stitches. Essentially “hiding” the chain stitches on the inside of the hat.
Do NOT make your hdc stitches AROUND the chain stitches. Other than pushing them behind your hook, ignore those stitches and do not crochet around them, or in them or otherwise look at them... ;)
Use the next few photos to help you understand where to place your stitches.
Here are a few more photos showing how to insert your hook and what not to do while crocheting this round.
As you continue working this round, you will be slip stitching to the top of each accent colour hdc stitches from the previous round. And crocheting 2 hdc stitches into each skipped st.
Your piece should look like this as you are working this round.
All the rest of the colour work rounds in this pattern are worked using the same technique as Rounds 4A and 4B.
Each accent round moves over by one stitch creating a staggered “rainbow” effect with the accent yarn.
(As shown in this photo.)
On the inside of your hat, you should be able to see your accent chain stitches “floating” on the inside of the hat.
Your seam will not be invisible. You will see a few little bumps showing through. It is what it is. (Picture me shrugging.)
It’s something you will notice as you’re crocheting, but no one in real life will actually notice those little bumps. Don’t stress over them.
If your hat does not look like the sample photos above, either on the outside or the inside, then chances are you have made a mistake somewhere along the way. Read over all the instructions, making sure you haven’t skipped any important notes.
See the “troubleshooting” page for help with specific issues.
Congrats! You’ve completed the first 2 colourwork rounds! Hopefully, the next rounds will be easier for you, and before you know it, you’ll be crocheting this pattern with confidence!

I’ve linked to certain products within this pattern. If you click and then purchase one of the products, I will earn a small commission. The awesome thing is, the commission doesn’t come out of your pocket, it’s paid to me by a big company. I would never recommend a product to you unless I think it is valuable. Every item I recommend in this tutorial is something I personally use.
